God's watchful eye

Author: Monica Koch

Genesis 16:14 “Wherefore the well was called Beerlahairoi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.”

No longer able to bear her suffering in the home of her mistress Sara, Hagar runs to the desert in search of relief and solitude. When Hagar subsequently encounters the angel she realizes that one is never alone or out of God’s sight. The well where this encounter takes place is therefore named be’er lachai ro-ee (באר לחי ראי), the ‘well of the Living One Who sees me.’ Specifically in the Land of Israel, God’s presence and watchful eye is felt strongly, as it says in Deuteronomy (11:12) “on which Hashem your God always keeps His eye.”

May you rest peacefully tonight in this knowledge that no matter where you are at this point in your life, no matter what you may be facing, the Living One sees you and He always keeps His eye on you.
