Circumcision in the covenant

Author: Venessa Holtzhausen

I want to share with you a different part on the Covenant.

Today’s portion is from Gen 18 where the Lord appeared to Abraham.  If you look at the context, it says YHVH appeared to Abraham and later on it says that the Word of G-d spoke to him. Here the Lord comes with two Malachim, which are two angels, to Abraham and say Sarah your wife, on its appointed time (Meodim) will bear a child.

Abraham and Sarah thought it good to help G-d in His appointed time which He spoke of and made their own Meodim (appointed time), because they thought He was taking too long, after ten years, then they had to realise that man-made timing only cause problems.

Sarah laughed in the tent when G-d spoke the Word, and G-d directed the question to Abraham in asking why Sarah laughed, whereby she denied laughing, out of fear.

Here again we see a parallel taking place when He says, will anything be too difficult for Him?

Gen 18:14 “Is anything too hard or too wonderful for the Lord? At the appointed time, when the season [for her delivery] comes around, I will return to you and Sarah shall have borne a son.”

In Luke 1:37 we see that G-d repeats Himself.

“For with God nothing is ever impossible and no word from God shall be without power or impossible of fulfilment.”

You need to understand that G-d speak in parallel’s with His people.  He uses incidents that we can look at the situations and draw the parallel between the Old and New Testament’s.

Today we will be looking at one of these parallel’s.

G-d made a Covenant with Abraham and says to him, now Abraham on 99 years of age, you have to circumcise yourself and all those with you.  Then the New Testament speak of the circumcision of the heart.  G-d made a covenant with Abraham giving him and his descendants to come, the land in front of him, but after He had made the covenant with Abraham, they in return had to do something.  Abraham, you and everyone with you have to circumcise yourselves.

It was three days after the circumcision that G-d visited Abraham.  Three is a Godly number.  It is a complete number.  Three days after he made the covenant with the Lord, I am not only hearing about the covenant, but I am taking a step to be part of this covenant. G-d has a covenant on with the whole world, but not all are part of the covenant. To be part of a covenant requires action from our side.  Abraham needed this sign as standing in covenant with G-d and everyone who did not have the sign of the circumcision was not part of the promises of Abraham, even though they are sons of Abraham.

It’s an important point to remember as we will look at it again in a few moments in the New Testament.

We see that if you did not go through the circumcision, you literally said to G-d that you did not choose to be a part of the covenant and all the blessings being part of Abraham, would not be on you.  Thus, children cannot ride on the parent’s salvation, but when you pray for your child who does not want to serve the Lord, G-d will reach them.  Don’t stop praying for them, because the covenant says ‘for me and my house’.

Circumcision is to be on the eight day.  Eight indicate new beginnings. We see how G-d work things, He never does anything just because of, but He spoke to Abraham in a language (way) he understood. His ways are perfect as He is. Circumcision wasn’t something new to Abraham, he understood it. Even with us today, G-d will speak to each one of us in the way that we will understand Him. We complicate G-d, while He is not complicated.  He does not deal with every person in the same manner, as we all differ, but He knows how to reach each and every one of us.  Abraham knew exactly what G-d expected of him.

Covenant in Hebrew is B’rit.  It literally means to cut and it also means the law of nature.

Now, let’s look at what happened in the Garden of Eden.  What happened when Adam and Eve sinned?  They knew they were naked, and nakedness stand as a sign of sin.  One of the Sages declared and said that circumcision was removing the foreskin of the world.  Before His crucifixion, Yahshua HaMashiach came and cursed the fig tree, the very same thing which was used in the Garden to cover Adam and Eve’s nakedness.  Now the covenant says it is to cut and the law of nature.

The entrance through circumcision took place when the part which was cut off, was buried into the ground. The living was there as a testimony that he was part of a covenant.

Men should know what a big responsibility is upon them for their family.  G-d holds men responsible for their house, to carry their family in prayer, to stand in on their behalf for the promises of G-d.  The wife is there to boost the man and to be a pillar for him.  Peter says, in the natural sense that the women are to adore, praise and to worship her man, but the responsibility on the man is extremely high.

Since the Garden, it has not changed.  To whom did G-d give the responsibility to protect the Garden? Adam! He kept Adam responsible for the fall; He walked into a covenant with Abraham.  The father’s had the responsibility to bring the lambs for sacrifice. The men had to go through circumcision, in order that the woman and children can be part of the covenant with Abraham.  I have seen it many times that a godless woman is married with a godly man and the house is blessed, but I’ve also seen when a godly woman is married to a godless man, and the house is in a mess, because men have received an authority from the Lord for and on behalf of his house.

The Word says that the sword of the Lord slain the Shepherd.  It’s not men who crucified Christ, they were only a method to a purpose.

Matthew 26:31 ‘Then Jesus said to them, You will all be offended and stumble and fall away because of Me this night, for it is written, I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’

Zechariah 13:7 ‘Awake, O sword, against My shepherd and against the man who is My associate, says the Lord of hosts; smite the shepherd and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered, and I will turn back My hand and stretch it out again upon the little ones of the flock.’

It means that it pleased the Father, to cut His Son.

Isaiah 53:10 ‘Yet it was the will of the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief and made Him sick.  When You and He make His life an offering for sin [and He has risen from the dead, in time to come], He shall see His spiritual offspring, He shall prolong His days, and the will and pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.’

Colossians 1:19-22 ‘For it has pleased the Father that all the divine fullness (the sum total of the divine perfection, powers, and attributes) should dwell in Him permanently. (20) And God purposed that through Him [the Son] all things should be completely reconciled back to Himself, whether on earth or in heaven, as through Him, [the Father] made peace by means of the blood of His cross. (21) And although you at one time were estranged and alienated from Him and were of hostile attitude of mind in your wicked activities, (22) Yet now has Christ, the messiah reconciled you to God in the body of His flesh through death, in order to present you holy and faultless and irreproachable in His [the Father’s] presence.’

Because, a covenant was busy taking place.  Just as Abraham was a type of G-d the Father, lifted up the knife to slaughter Isaac, so G-d the  Father came and the sword of the Lord slay (strike / smite / cut) the Shepherd.  He is talking to us in a covenant language.

As the circumcision was cut off and buried in the ground, so too, Yahshua HaMashiach was cut and buried in the ground, but after three days he rose from the dead in a glorified body, to the glorification of His Father and the covenant is confirmed.  Henceforth there is no slave or freeman, man or woman, but He opened the door and the curtain was torn, and the Father said, I’ve cut the covenant and all may enter in.  Therefore we hear Yahshua HaMashiach crying out, my G-d my G-d why has Thou forsaken me, and it happened because the sword of the Lord slay the Shepherd.  He was busy fulfilling something in front of all mankind, and listen to what the Word says,

Romans 2:28-29 ‘For he is not a real Jew who is only one outwardly, nor is true circumcision something external and physical (29) But he is a Jew who is one inwardly, and [true] circumcision is of the heart, a spiritual and not a literal matter.  His praise is not from men but from God.’

Philippians 3:3 ‘For we are the true circumcision, who worship God in spirit and by the Spirit of God and exult and glory and pride ourselves in Jesus Christ, and put no confidence or dependence in the flesh and on outward privileges and physical advantages and external appearances’

Colossians 2:11 ‘In Him also you were circumcised with a circumcision not made with hands, but in a spiritual circumcision performed by Christ by stripping off the body of the flesh (the whole corrupt, carnal nature with its passions and lusts).’

Deut 10:16 ‘So circumcise the foreskin of your hearts; be no longer stubborn and hardened.’

We now have the circumcision of the heart through the Holy Spirit.  If the Spirit of God, Whom raised Him from the dead, living in our hearts, we are alive as Christ is.

The Word further comes and Christ declares to them about the ten virgins.  Everyone is carrying the same name, but half of them are without oil, which represents the Holy Spirit.  The Word further says that the Spirit of G-d witnesses with our spirit that we are children of the Lord.  It is the Spirit of G-d who brings the circumcision of the heart.  You need to carry a sign that you are part of the covenant.  Many people go to the Hebrew roots, and I hear that people say we need to circumcise ourselves in order that we can be part of the covenant.  No, the Holy Spirit now circumcises the heart and where He does this, He will be visible, through His gifts and the fruit.  Where the Holy Spirit is there will be life and spiritual growth.  If someone tells me after 5 years of being with the Lord, they are still the same, and then there is a major problem.  G-d is always moving forward.  He is always progressive.  You either move forward with G-d or you move backwards.  If the Spirit of G-d is living in me, then there should be progress in my Spiritual life.  He has already dealt with sin.  He is in a glorified body and He is saying that we need to circumcise our hearts.  Everyone these days are Christians, but not all are Children of G-d.

The Word says we are the temple of the Holy Spirit.  G-d is not living in temples made with hands, but He is living in us.  Each one of us can lay hands on the sick and they be healed, praying in tongues, anyone can have a prophecy, discernment, etc., because we have received the circumcision of the heart.  I am full of the Spirit of G-d, His Spirit testifies with my Spirit, I have a sign in me, He says, Father, I am the sign in Your child.  Not everyone saying Lord Lord, will enter in, those who carry the sign of the covenant, those will enter in.

If you look at Lot’s life, he sat in the city, being a leader of Sodom and the Word does not make Lot to be a bad person, but he allowed Sodom to change him, instead of him changing Sodom.  When the men wanted to rape the angels, he wanted to give his daughters to them.

The Spirit of G-d brings separation between the true church and the world.  Abraham was circumcised and he saw the victory.  Lot took the best land, a land with enough water and green and most probably he was wealthy.  Abraham went into the desert, but went in with the sign of the covenant.  Lot went forth, which looked good to the eye, but without G-d.  At the end of the day, if Abraham did not stand in the gap for Lot, then he and his people most probably would have been destroyed along with Sodom.  Lot fled out of the city with his daughters with only the clothes on their backs.  Everything he worked on was burnt out.  Abraham went into the desert, but being a covenant bearer, he had G-d with him.  While Lot was fleeing for his life sitting in a cave, there was another man in the desert, but he was rich in G-d in all areas of his life.  Canaan was given to him and his descendants.

Child of G-d, do not put your eyes on the things of this earth which look good to the eye, just as it looked to Lot.  There are even things the enemy will make look good to an individual, even under the name of the Lord, but if we do not carry the sign of the covenant, it is in vain.

What is heart in Hebrew?  Lev or Levav, which means your inner thoughts, your inner man.  Is it in obedience to the Spirit of G-d?  It is here in our thoughts we decide if we are going to follow G-d, it’s here we think and battle out things.

Let our inner man be circumcised by the Holy Spirit and let us think on the things above and not on that of the earth, as it will make you depressed and take you away from G-d, but you can be in a desert land and the sign of the covenant will show that G-d is with you.  You don’t need a beautiful land, but you need the sign of the Covenant, that’s all and G-d will carry you through.  This world is striding down from one disaster to another and it’s only the man and woman who know their G-d from close who will make it through.

Let us encourage one another and allow the Holy Spirit to cleanse us from everything which could stand in the way for us.  Read Ephesians and Galatians and learn what the Holy Spirit does not like.

Make a choice for the Lord and keep with it.
